Microneedling Q & A

Microneedling uses very fine needles — microneedles — to make small punctures in your skin. These small wounds stimulate your skin to produce collagen and elastin. Both proteins are vital for maintaining strong, resilient skin. Unfortunately, your body produces less of them as you get older.

When old skin at the surface is replaced with new skin that’s rich in collagen and elastin, your skin is rejuvenated.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is blood plasma that contains a higher number of platelets than the amount normally found in blood. Platelets contain proteins called growth factors, which naturally promote healing, reduce inflammation, and trigger the production of collagen, blood vessels, skin cells, and other tissues.

Dr. Ram makes PRP at the clinic by drawing a sample of your blood and placing it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the other components of your blood. The platelets and plasma are then used for your PRP treatment.

How is PRP used with microneedling?

After making tiny channels in your skin with microneedling, your PRP is applied to the area. The punctures allow the platelets to penetrate deep into your skin.

The combined effect of microneedling with PRP fights the signs of aging, as the treatment:

  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Eliminates brown spots and skin discolorations
  • Tightens and tones skin
  • Fades acne scarring
  • Reduces stretch marks
  • Improves skin quality and texture

But that’s not all PRP and microneedling can accomplish. They’re also effective at treating hair loss.

What effects do microneedling and PRP have on hair loss?

When microneedling is combined with PRP, they can treat male- and female-pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia. Although PRP can be used alone and injected into balding areas, microneedling allows Dr. Ram to easily cover a larger area.

As the microneedling allows PRP to penetrate hair follicles, its growth factors can promote hair regrowth. In addition to stimulating new hair growth, PRP may increase the number of new hairs, slow down hair loss, and increase overall hair thickness.

After one treatment, you’ll come back for a follow-up appointment in a few months so Dr. Ram can assess your results. Once your hair is restored, you can schedule maintenance treatments.
